Basic functions for foreign trade in SAP S/4HANA

Due to the discontinuation of the previous foreign trade functionalities (SAP SD-FT), all existing SAP customers will have to think about how to map their foreign trade and compliance requirements in SAP S/4HANA by the end of 2027 at the latest.

SAP S/4HANA International Trade is SAP's new foreign trade module for operation on the SAP S/4HANA platform. It provides some functionalities that are business critical for companies' international trade activities. These include governance, risk management and compliance management.

Some of the functionalities, such as classification and Intrastat, are offered as standard and are essential for most small and medium-sized companies. Thus, they serve as the basis for the Mercoline solutions of the M.SecureTrade Suite.

Features at a glance

Classification: classification of products with statistical commodity codes and Intrastat service codes

Legal control: Control of legal regulations for import and export

Embargo: Manage embargo countries and check against receipts

Intrastat: Management of Intrastat declarations and their master data

When does SAP International Trade pay off?

At the time of implementing a foreign trade solution or migrating to SAP S/4HANA, many companies are not sure how to find the best solution for their business. They ask themselves the following question: are the International Trade components in S/4HANA the optimal tools to meet the requirements of foreign trade?

Unfortunately there is no clear answer to this question and it depends on your foreign trade requirements. Some of the above mentioned functionalities are offered as standard in SAP International Trade. Other processes, such as ATLAS customs processing or preference management are not supported. Therefore, for most midsize and large companies, an extension of the functions through SAP-integrated add-ons, e.g. the M.SecureTrade Suite, is necessary.
